——- Remanufactured Engines for Swaps ——-

As Gen III era (1999-2007) GM Vortec Trucks & SUV's approach 20+ years old, finding lower mile engines (under 200k) is getting extremely hard. We are starting to see these vehicles and even Gen IV era (2008-2013) vehicles come into the wrecking yards with remanufactured engines on occasion.

Jasper is a common nationwide remanufacture / rebuild company of engines, transmissions, gearboxes, etc. Many local auto shops nationwide use Jasper to source these types of parts for their customers. Additionally we have even seen GM Performance Rebuilt engines come through the system as well. Both of these remanufactured engines are easily identified and traceable by tags located on the engine blocks. In the case of the GM remanufactured engines there is a date on this tag. For Jasper engines, you can call them and they will give you the “sold date” based on the serial number.

In an effort to continue to supply Gen III and Gen IV Vortec engines to our customers we are going to start purchasing these engines when we can approximate the actual mileages. This approximation has to be done with a bit of investigative techniques and interpolation of the Carfax. Its common that a Carfax report does not show the actual engine being replaced. Therefore, based on the “sold date” of the remanufactured engine we can closely approximate the actual mileage of the remanufactured engine versus the miles stated on the odometer of the vehicle.

We have processed a few engines of this category to date and have been happy with the results. But in an effort to supply a quality product these engines will get some extra attention and parts. Since the vehicle was more than likely “high miles” when the remanufactured engine was replaced, the accessories are typically from the original engine and are therefore “high miles” themselves. This adds some additional cost over our standard engine package. We therefore feel it necessary to replace the following:

  • Wiring Harness

  • Water Pump

  • Alternator

  • Power Steering Pump

  • Starter

  • Injectors (8)

In the end you can end up with a very low mile engine & brand new accessory package for only a bit more in cost. These engines will still go through our standard process of testing, tuning, and documenting as well as having full dyno tuning services available.

Here are some pictures of a Jasper “Reman” engine we processed from a vehicle that the Carfax showed 200k+ miles. By doing some investigative work we determined that this engine more than likely had less than 10k miles on it. These pictures were taken during our cam swap process to document the engine. As you can see, YES, this engine is practically brand new internally.

In the end the customer got an extremely low mile engine for only a little bit more money. Jasper does paint their complete long block reman engines a medium gray color. Some of this paint comes off in our processing and cleaning but this type of finish is to be expected. GM reman engines have a bit more “original” look to them. The Jasper engines are easily identified by the gray paint.
