Conclusion: A 4 Inch "Log" style airbox performs just a well as an elaborate / difficult to make, fiberglass or carbon fiber airbox. If packaging is really difficult stepping down to a 3 Inch "Log" style airbox saves a lot of space and you really don't give up that much. From the Best to the Worst its a 5% difference. Would a pilot be able to tell the difference, "Maybe", "maybe", "m a y b e"!

Background: The Airbox has been a major hurtle / project for many. I saw Craig Timm make his simple "Log" style Airbox and thought that was a great idea "IF" you don't give up that much. As seen by Craig's and the simple ones I made for this test from plumbing parts at Home Depot it is much easier and quicker to fabricate. I think I spent 10-15 minutes on each. You use the rubber velocity stacks and drill about a 1.90in hole in the "Log". A simple cap at one end, and your air filter on the other. The "Log" would need to be fastened / supported to the engine and the velocity stacks siliconed in place, etc. But this design should be MUCH easier for just about everyone.

Notes: This engine was ran with my custom AEM EFI system.
Engine was brought up to operating temperature (coolant & oil) and several pulls made as a baseline and were consistent within 3HP. The various Airboxes were all tested within about a 1 hour period while atmospheric conditions were monitored - little to no variation observed. 3 pulls of each configuration was made with the average taken for each. The No Airbox / Velocity Stack pull was done during original 2011-2018 Apex dyno tuning. It is interesting that there is a 10+ HP difference between bare throttle bodies & the Custom Airbox!
